Chudleigh Caves, a first look
A first trip to the Chudleigh caves, exploring the non gated caves that I managed to find. Most of the caves were at the base on a south facing limestone cliff. Unfortunatley it has been hard to distinguish the names of the individual caves explored due to the lack of available information. Starting furthest away I believe the first visited was Boulton's Rift; the entrance with the rusting remains of a gate that has long been destroyed, the cave, short continuing for approx 15m before leading to a boulder choke. Several other small rifts were explored along the face before crossing the river to the south side. It was here that i searched the side of the valley for some of the other caves marked on the DCUC cave register. Searching for Skullcap cave although not anywhere near the location given on the register I found a small inconspicuous hole under some rocks leading into a small chamber followed by a tight crawl from there on. I did not go far into the tight crawl as I was alone and my companion down by the river taking photographs. After scouring the area further nothing else was found and I called it a day.
